Highwayman

Definition
Example from the poem
How effective do you think it was? Did you like it?
Simile
A way of speech involving a comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind.
His eyes were hollows of madness, his hair like moldy hay,
I loved this simile the way the author wrote it. I think it really describes the Highwayman.
Metaphor
A figure of speech in which a word or phrase is compared to an object or action to which it is not possible.
The wind was a torrent of darkness among the gusty trees,
I think that this is a good metaphor. It is really interesting.
Alliteration
The same letter or sound at the beginning of closely connected words.
Over the cobbles he clattered and clashed in the dark inn-yard,
I think this is a good alliteration. It keeps you hooked in for the rest of the poem.
Repetition
The action of repeating that has already been written or said
The highwayman came riding--
Riding--riding--

I think this one is smart. It continues on and on. It sound good when it is in the poem too.
Symbolism
An artistic and poetic way or style using images or words to express emotions etc
Down the ribbon of moonlight, over the brow of the hill,
I think this is a great example because the words just gel well together and get you really hooked.

You can either use these definitions or put it into your own words...

Starting a series of words with the same consonant sound e.g. A big black boulder.
Saying that one thing is similar to another e.g. My fingers are like ice.
The use of one object or action (a symbol) to represent or suggest something else.
Repeating the same words or phrases a few times to make an idea clearer.
Saying that one thing is another e.g. My fingers are ice.
